Dallas Mavs Ex Reggie Bullock Reaches Contract Buyout with Spurs

Former Mavs wing Reggie Bullock was traded to the Spurs in part of the Grant Williams sign-and-trade, but he will now become a free agent after a buyout.

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks underwent many roster changes this offseason, and one of the players the players they moved on from was Reggie Bullock. The veteran wing was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in part of a three-team sign-and-trade deal bringing Grant Williams to Dallas in July.

Bullock will not be spending the final year of his three-year, $30 million contract with the Spurs. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Bullock has reached a contract buyout agreement with San Antonio.

"The San Antonio Spurs and veteran wing Reggie Bullock have agreed to a contract buyout, sources tell The Athletic," Charania wrote. "Bullock is set to enter free agency where several championship contenders and playoff teams will pursue him."

Reggie Bullock, Dallas Mavericks

Reggie Bullock helped the Dallas Mavericks make it to the 2022 Western Conference Finals.

The Spurs faced a roster crunch due to having 17 players before waiving Bullock. The team will still need to move on from additional players before trimming the roster to the maximum 15 players allowed. Other players potentially considered roster bubble candidates are Khem Birch and Cedi Osman.

Bullock averaged 7.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 78 games with the Mavs last season. Despite a slow shooting start to the season, he wound up converting at a 38.0 percent clip from deep on 5.1 attempts per game. However, he displayed regression defensively, along with limitations beyond spot-up shooting.

The Mavs now have Josh Green, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Olivier-Maxence Prosper as options to play on the wing alongside Williams at the four. It remains to be seen which player will be penciled in as the starter at the three spots, but the team will begin preseason testing Prosper in the role for evaluation purposes, with Green being a likely option to be cycled in, while Hardaway fills a key role in the second unit.

After a successful stint with the New York Knicks from 2019 to 2021, Bullock signed with the Mavs in free agency for the team's non-taxpayer midlevel exception. The final year of his deal was initially partially guaranteed until a deadline in late June, but Dallas fully guaranteed it before trading him.

Bullock, 32, will likely draw interest from title contenders seeking more depth on the wing. There will naturally be a draw to add a 6-foot-6 wing with a 3-and-D skill set for a discounted contract to add more depth.
