LISTEN: Mavs Season Recap; Wemby Lottery Dreaming & Offseason Trade Scenarios
Here lies the 2022-23 Dallas Mavericks… We’d say they will be missed, but that’s a big enough lie that our noses might extend out a few feet from our faces if we told it.
On Sunday afternoon, the Mavs’ abysmal season finally … mercifully … ended with a 138-117 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. The loss helped Dallas take sole possession of the 10th-best odds in the NBA Draft Lottery on May 16.
On today’s episode of the Mavs Step Back Podcast, we recap Dallas’ first losing season since Luka Doncic’s rookie year and discuss some ways the front office can take steps to turning the franchise’s situation around this summer.
Doncic might not be contemplating asking for a trade right now, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen later on if there are more disappointing seasons like what we just witnessed.
From there, we ramp up our Victor Wembanyama draft lottery dreaming. If the Mavs are fortunate enough to obtain a top-four pick, should they entertain trading it to replenish their roster depth and future draft assets? If the answer is “yes,” there are a handful of potential trade scenarios to consider, including Toronto Raptors All-Star forward Pascal Siakam.
We finish up this one by talking about Kyrie Irving’s stellar offense fit with Doncic, and whether or not we think the Mavs can re-sign him this summer with no added drama. If Irving does decide to walk, could Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young, who has surfaced in trade rumors yet again, be a viable backup plan?
The Mavs’ offseason came sooner than any of us expected it would, and the pipe-dream speculation is already off to a fast start.
