OFFICIAL: Mavs Sign Seth Curry to 2-Year Contract; What’s Next?

The Dallas Mavs officially signed Seth Curry on Friday night. It will be his third stint with the franchise.
In this story:

DALLAS — After reaching an agreement on a three-year, $126 million contract with Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks made another move on the opening day of NBA free agency by striking a deal with sharpshooter Seth Curry. That deal finally became official on Friday night, as Curry put pen to paper on a two-year deal.

In terms of salary, it was initially reported that the Mavs would be signing Curry using their near $4.5 million biannual exception, but they could also end up using part of their $12.4 mid-level exception to sign him as well, saving the BAE for next offseason. We should have more clarity on this contract detail soon.

Curry, 32, averaged 9.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 61 games this season. He played the previous two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, including 40 of his performances alongside Irving.

After rejoining the Mavs, Curry is set to take part in his third stint with the organization. He first played in Dallas during the 2016-17 season then alter in 2019-20. His most recent stint ended after being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Josh Richardson. Just like in his previous two stints, Curry will wear No. 30.

With a combination of Jaden Hardy, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Curry now all on the Mavs' bench, it remains to be seen if further trade activity will occur for the team to achieve better roster balance. There is still a need for the team to add more impact in key areas like defense and rebounding.

The only asset the Mavs have at their disposal in terms of future first-round draft capital for a potential trade this offseason is their 2027 selection. Without including Josh Green or Jaden Hardy in a trade scenario, Dallas is largely limited to offering unappealing contracts to utilize in trade scenarios.

The Mavs used the NBA Draft to add Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper into the fold. Regardless, Dallas still faces a need to add more veteran talent to fill important roles alongside Luka Doncic and Irving after a 38-44 season in 2022-23.
