NBA Trade BREAKING: Mavs Target John Collins Moves to Jazz
Entering NBA Draft week, the Dallas Mavericks, who possessed the No. 10 pick, had a lot to sort out. They got their men in draftees Dereck Lively II and Omar Prosper and vet Holmes.
But they also examined doing business with the Atlanta Hawks … who have apparently decided to be realistic about John Collins’ trade value.
According to Yahoo! Sports' Jake Fischer, Dallas and Atlanta had discussed a trade that would swap Davis Bertans and the No. 10 pick for Collins and the No. 15 pick. However, the Mavs would’ve rather had Clint Capela over Collins, and NBA insider Marc Stein reported that there has been “no common ground” in those trade discussions because of this.
What happened on Monday? The Hawks are reportedly finalizing a trade to send Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick. … mostly to dump Collins’ fat contract.
Let us review our pre-Draft proposals to see how they ended up aligning with reality. …
Trade #1 — Salary Dump, But No Pick Swap
Mavs receive: John Collins, 2023 first-round pick (No. 15)
Hawks receive: Tim Hardaway Jr., JaVale McGee
Trade #2 — Why Not Both Big Men?
Mavs receive: John Collins, Clint Capela, 2023 first-round pick (No. 15)
Hawks receive: Tim Hardaway Jr., Davis Bertans, JaVale McGee, 2023 first-round pick (No. 10)
It’s water under the bridge now - at least regarding Collins and the picks. And Holmes’ contract is no picnic. But we believe the Jazz/Hawks swap establishes that our gauging of the situation was accurate,
Did Atlanta want to get off Collins’ contract bad enough to surrender pick No. 15 with no swap for No. 10? Would it have been willing to part with both Capela and Collins in order to get the pick swap?
The answer to both of those questions - assuming ideas were pitched - was “no,” … so the Mavs looked elsewhere, happy with Duke 7-footer Lively II at trade-back pick No. 12 as the prize of the night.
