Mavs WATCH: Kyrie's Unbelievable Layup Over Wemby - ‘Lucky Shot,’ Says Rookie

In the third quarter of the Dallas Mavericks' Wednesday night matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, Kyrie Irving got an insane layup attempt to go in over 7-5 rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.

After getting off the a sluggish start in the first quarter, the Dallas Mavericks poured it on the San Antonio Spurs over the next two quarters, turning a 15-point deficit into a 23-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Star point guard Kyrie Irving was a huge reason for that Mavs surge, as he tallied 26 points in the first three quarters. During that third quarter, where the Mavs outscored the Spurs by a 32-14 margin, Irving challenged 7-5 rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama in the paint and finished an insane layup over him.

"Big fella [Wembanyama] just came over and said that was a lucky shot,” Irving said in his postgame interview with Bally Sports Southwest.

For the second consecutive game, the Mavs came out flat against a bottom-dwelling team, but perhaps that is due to the team still getting used to having newcomers Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington on the roster. Despite those growing pains, it's encouraging that Dallas has been able to continue racking up wins while still trying to figure things out.

If Irving is going to play with this kind of fire for the rest of the season, alongside Luka Doncic playing like an MVP candidate, expect the Mavs to make a big push up the Western Conference standings after the All-Star break.
