NBA Free Agency Rumor: Mavs Interested in Jaylen Nowell?
The Dallas Mavericks have done a great job of reshaping their roster this summer after failing to make the playoffs last season. An influx of young talent, including Dereck Lively II, OMax Prosper and Grant Williams, paired with some veteran additions as well, like Seth Curry, Dante Exum and Richaun Holmes, insures that Dallas will at least be more competitive than it was a year ago.
With that being said, the Mavs’ front office doesn’t appear to be finished making moves, as many believe Tim Hardaway Jr. and JaVale McGee could be on their way out of Dallas before the offseason dust settles. In the meantime, the latest free-agency rumor out there is linking the Mavs to Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Jaylen Nowell.
“No, he’s not coming back to the Wolves,” Timberwolves insider Darren Wolfson said on The Scoop podcast. “There’s a mutual understanding that, ‘Hey, time for Jaylen to move on.’ But here’s a new team in on Jaylen Nowell: the Dallas Mavericks. They need to create some roster flexibility, they are looking into doing some stuff is the word and it may not come to fruition. But Jaylen Nowell is on Dallas’ radar. The Nowell camp is still also awaiting finality on the Damian Lillard situation.”
Nowell, who is 24 years old, is an unrestricted free agent, and he’s coming off a four-year, $6.6 million deal with Minnesota. Last season, Nowell averaged a career-high 10.8 points while shooting 44.8 percent from the field.
Given that the Mavs currently have Hardaway, Curry and Jaden Hardy on the roster, it would make sense for a trade of some kind to happen before Dallas potentially makes a play for Nowell. The NBA offseason has been quiet for the last week, but that can change in the blink of an eye, especially if there’s a breakthrough in Damian Lillard or James Harden’s trade-request situations.
