Jonathan Kuminga Trade: Does Mavs Draft Deal with Warriors Make Sense?
The Dallas Mavericks hold the No. 10 pick in next week's NBA Draft, and with a crucial season upcoming, general manager Nico Harrison and company have a big decision to make on how to use that pick.
Dallas has been rumored to be looking to trade the No. 10 pick for either more picks or a win-now veteran or two who can immediately help Luka Doncic and the Mavs become a contender. That's easier said than done, though, as the Mavs aren't the only team who could be looking to make a move on draft day.
Reported by ESPN's Jonathan Givony on Wednesday, the Golden State Warriors could be looking to move up in next Thursday's draft for a lottery pick, with second-year forward Jonathan Kuminga being a potential trade piece.
“Sources tell ESPN the Warriors are exploring the option of acquiring a high draft pick in exchange for a young prospect such as Kuminga," Givony wrote.
For the Mavs, would Kuminga do anything for Harrison and the front office to be enticed by making a trade offer, let alone make them feel comfortable enough to part with the No. 10 pick?
In his sophomore campaign, Kuminga failed to make a jump with his role and stats as a member of the Warriors. This year, he averaged 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game in just under 21 minutes per game.
Though he hasn't met his potential yet, the ceiling is still high for Kuminga, who is still only 20 years old. With his build and skillset, the former No. 7 pick could flourish in the right role in a new situation. In Dallas, Kuminga would seemingly step in and play significant minutes as one of their primary wing defenders.
This hypothetical offer from Dallas could make sense: JaVale McGee and the No. 10 pick for Kuminga and the No. 19 pick. This gives the Warriors a familiar face in McGee as a reserve center along with sending the Mavs a later first-round pick in return.
Is that enough for the Mavs to part with the No. 10 pick, especially in a draft class as deep as this one supposedly is? That's the big debate, as it feels plausible the Mavs could not just land a prospect at No. 10 that they like better than Kuminga, but they could potentially find a better trade package elsewhere.
