OFFICIAL: Mavs Sign Markieff Morris to Contract; Full Details
When the Dallas Mavericks made a trade with the Brooklyn Nets last season, most of the spotlight was on superstar point guard Kyrie Irving, and rightfully so. However, the Mavs did receive another player in that deal: 12-year veteran forward Markieff Morris.
On Saturday, the Mavs made it official and signed Morris to continue their partnership heading into the 2023-24 season. Per team policy, contract details weren’t provided in the Mavs’ official press release. However, NBA insider Michael Scotto shed some light on the kind of contract Morris signed.
“The Dallas Mavericks re-signed Markieff Morris to a partially guaranteed one-year, $3.2 million deal, league sources told @hoopshype. Morris got $200K guaranteed,” Scotto tweeted. This deal gives the Mavs some flexibility in case an opportunity comes up where they’d need to waive Morris.
While working his way back into game shape after being traded from Brooklyn, Morris didn’t get many opportunities to play for the Mavs last season. He only appeared in eight games and averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 42.4 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from deep.
In the Mavs’ final two games of the season — an organic tank job that drew wide criticism around the league, mainly from the national media — Morris averaged 11.5 points in 17.5 minutes per game.
We don’t foresee Morris having a big impact with the Mavs this coming season, but he has been a decent, serviceable role player for his entire career in seven previous stops. So if the 34-year-old vet comes into training camp in shape and motivated, perhaps he can prove us wrong.
