Mavs Coach Peter Patton Leaving Jason Kidd’s Staff; Joining Bulls
After a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, the Dallas Mavericks have a number of decisions to make heading into the offseason, whether that be via the draft, free agency, or trade to improve their roster around Luka Doncic.
But, there will also be changes to Jason Kidd's coaching staff, which now has two seats open on the bench and now one vacancy open on their player development staff.
Reported by K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago on Saturday, Mavericks shooting coach Peter Patton will be joining Billy Donovan's staff in Chicago as director of player development.
Patton had been Dallas' shooting coach since 2018, working closely with the likes of Luka Doncic, Josh Green, and former Maverick Jalen Brunson. In Patton's time in Dallas, the Mavericks ranked tied for 17th in the league in 3-point percentage, shooting 35.8 percent from downtown and peaking this season at 37.1 percent.
The departure of Patton adds a third vacancy to Kidd's coaching staff following the dismissal of assistant Greg St. Jean after the end of Dallas' season and the expected exit of Quinton Crawford, who is in talks to join Frank Vogel's staff with the Phoenix Suns, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
As Johnson noted, Patton heads home to Chicago, where he played at DePaul University before playing stints in the CBA and overseas in Europe.
Kidd will now look to fill an extra spot on the second row of his bench with a new shooting coach — hopefully one with a reputable resume.
