Frank Vogel, Suns to Hire Mavs Coach Away From Jason Kidd’s Staff

It looks like Jason Kidd could see another spot open up on his coaching staff as assistant Quinton Crawford could be Phoenix bound to reunite with Frank Vogel.
In this story:

As the Dallas Mavericks work their way through the offseason, it won't be just roster changes that they're looking to make — the coaching staff will look different, as well.

Following Greg St. Jean departing Jason Kidd's coaching staff after Dallas' season came to an end, two more vacancies look to be open.

On Saturday, it was reported that Mavs shooting coach Peter Patton would be joining the Chicago Bulls as their director of player development after spending five seasons in Dallas.

On Monday, NBA insider Marc Stein tweeted out that Mavs assistant Quinton Crawford is 'closing in' on a deal to join Frank Vogel's staff with the Phoenix Suns.

Crawford, who was apart of Vogel's staff from 2019-22 with the Lakers, joined Kidd's staff following the 2021-22 season once Vogel was fired. Crawford then opted to follow his former fellow assistant in Kidd, who spent two years on Vogel's staff in Los Angeles, to Dallas for this past season.

This move comes to the surprise of no one, as Crawford spent two years on Vogel's staff in Orlando prior to joining him in Los Angeles, as well.

As of now, Kidd has three openings on his staff to fill, including one on the front of the bench left behind by St, Jean. And with a number of veteran coaches already off the board and in new situations already, Kidd may have his hands full in filling out his staff.

We’ll see if these developments could result in the Mavs hiring former players as assistant coaches. One thing we know for sure: Former Mavs guard and fan favorite J.J. Barea is just waiting for that call from Kidd.
