Siakam Trade ‘Inevitable’: Mavs to Get Capela?
NBA offseason transactions have been put on hold for the better part of a month now, but that could change as we get closer to the start of the 2023-24 season.
Star guards Damian Lillard and James Harden have commanded most of the media attention with their trade demands, but NBA reporter Mark Medina, in an interview with Givemesport.com, hinted that Toronto Raptors’ Pascal Siakam might be the first domino to fall.
“It seems inevitable the Toronto Raptors will deal Siakam,” Medina said. “It’s become increasingly clear the Raptors are not currently constructed to become a serious playoff threat. So what’s the point in running on empty calories just to finish in the middle of the standings?”
If the Raptors do decide to trade Siakam, the Dallas Mavericks will certainly be hoping he ends up going to the Atlanta Hawks, assuming there’s no real chance of him ending up in Dallas. If that happens, the Mavs could likely end up getting Hawks veteran big man Clint Capela in a three-team trade. Dallas’ interest in Capela has been well documented.
“It seems unpredictable, however, on when the Raptors trade Siakam,” Medina said. “They expect a strong deal for return in the form of quality rotation players, expiring contracts and draft picks, all qualities that help accelerate a rebuild.”
Nothing has happened yet, but the Mavs are patiently watching and waiting for an opportunity to arise. GM Nico Harrison and company have had a productive offseason after missing the postseason last year, and they’ll be looking to make at least one more move — hopefully before the new season begins.
