Kyle Kuzma, P.J. Washington Remain Mavs ‘Preferred’ Trade Targets; Andrew Wiggins Interest ‘Overstated’

Here are the latest trade rumblings involving the Dallas Mavericks with the deadline less than 48 hours away.

With the NBA trade deadline less than 48 hours away, the Dallas Mavericks are working the phones, trying to make frontcourt upgrades to boost their chances of contending for a title this season.

Dallas has been linked to several forwards, including Washington Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma, Charlotte Hornets’ P.J. Washington and Golden State Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins. According to a new report from NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs’ interest in Wiggins has been overblown, and their focus remains on Kuzma and Washington.

“There were no active discussions between Dallas and Golden State as of Tuesday lunchtime on an Andrew Wiggins trade, league sources say,” Stein wrote. “Sources tell The Stein Line that the Mavericks’ reported interest in Wiggins has been overstated.

“The Mavericks’ priority continues to be the pursuit of a power forward; Washington’s Kuzma and Charlotte’s P.J. Washington have been their preferred targets for days.”

Kuzma and Washington would instantly upgrade the Mavs’ frontcourt situation, but if part of their trade price includes Dallas’ 2027 first-round pick, that could complicate things. However, if the Mavs could potentially get both players, plus a decent backup center in a potential three-way trade — as we’ve spitballed about here at DallasBasketball.com — then that might change the Dallas front office’s thinking on parting ways with its most-valuable current draft asset remaining.

Trade talks are always fluid, and things can move quickly as the time ticks down toward the Thursday deadline, so stay tuned to DallasBasketball.com for any updates regarding the Mavs’ trade pursuits.
