The Brooklyn Nets get an impressive blowout victory over the Spurs
The Nets were in a rut after a three-game losing streak coming into this game against the San Antonio Spurs. Coach Jacque Vaughn’s team was motivated to end the losing streak, winning this game in a blowout 123 to 103.
It was a fantastic game for the entire Nets roster, with six players scoring in double digits. Cameron Thomas led the Nets in scoring, but the newest Net, Dennis Schroder, was the standout, scoring 15 points and dishing out 12 assists.
“I think overall, he was able to show his ability to be a point guard on the floor. Whether that was getting plays from me on the fly, whether that was organizing and getting our group into good sets,” Coach Vaughn said about Schroder’s debut performance from Brooklyn. “You saw his ability to have some toughness about him, whether that was guarding Wemby or guarding the other guys. Just an IQ piece that is going to be very important for our group going forward.”
A well-rounded performance from the Nets
This game against San Antonio was one of the Nets’ best performances of the season because everyone was superb. Mikal Bridges was the top player, but Thomas, Schroder, and Nic Claxton had strong performances.
Even Ben Simmons had a good game, flying all over the court. That is the Simmons that Coach Vaughn wants to keep seeing, which opens plenty of opportunities for different rotations.
Having a reliable ball-handler like Schroder on the roster gives a chance for other players to start scoring. Claxton benefited from the German guard’s playmaking, throwing down multiple dunks from Dennis’ pinpoint passes.
Brooklyn can build off this win
The result is a morale booster for the rest of Brooklyn’s season. San Antonio has a mediocre record at 10-43, but they always make it hard for their opponents. Brooklyn dominated after holding the Spurs to only 18 points in the second quarter.
While Victor Wembanyama scored 21 points, San Antonio struggled to bridge the gap with the Nets. Coach Vaughn should be pleased with what he saw from his team because they played with pace, which bodes well for the back-to-back against the Boston Celtics right before the All-Star Break.
