League sources project Nic Claxton's 2024 Free Agency value in the marketplace
In terms of the Brooklyn Nets' upcoming obligations in this year's offseason, all eyes are certainly watching how they'll handle Nic Claxton's free agency case.
Claxton is currently in the final year of his two-year contract with the Nets for over $17M. He will enter the marketplace this summer as one of the key unrestricted free agents and the Nets’ most prioritized unit to consider retaining.
Though the offseason remains a few months away, there is already some considerable buzz inside and outside of the Nets World about Nic’s impending market value. As such, two league figures have shared their respective insights and salary ranges for the Brooklyn big man.
League sources’ projection in Nic’s 2024 market value
An unnamed agent told New York Post's Brian Lewis that Claxton could snag a four-year deal, which can be estimated at up to $90M in value — a similar mark to what his Nets teammate Cam Johnson was able to secure from last year's offseason.
As a free agent in the previous offseason, Cam notably hammered a new contract with the Nets worth around that mark.
“One agent told The Post this week that Claxton would likely command a four-year, $90 million deal — roughly similar to the four-year extension Nets teammate Cam Johnson signed last summer that will pay him $94.5 million total, $90 million guaranteed.”
On the other hand, an anonymous league source has informed Lewis that the center might get retained for around a contract range that is similar to what Atlanta Hawks big man Clint Capela is currently enjoying.
“Added another league source: “If more cap space teams don’t surface, they’ll probably end up getting him back at market value,” which he suggested would be in the neighborhood of Clint Capela’s shorter two-year, $45.8 million pact. But considering Claxton’s age, he likely could command a similar salary for at least another year, if not two.”
Nic deserves the regard he deserves from the Nets
This 2023-24, Nic is currently averaging 12.2 points, 9.9 boards, 2.3 blocks, and 1.8 assists — a seeming replication of the stat line he hammered from last year.
Amid the noticeable stagnancy of numbers, this doesn't deflect the fact that the 24-year-old is a talented big man who has a huge defensive upside. Nic has been foundational and truly fits the franchise's current timeline and plans.
Only time can tell what would unfold between the partnership of both Claxton and the Nets, but the ball club has to show the maximum eagerness to keep him as the market and plenty of rival suitors would truly rave about his length, shot-blocking, and potential.
