“A big part of that is continuity” - Nets coach Jacque Vaughn sounds off on the Bucks’ sudden sacking of Adrian Griffin
The Milwaukee Bucks topped the NBA headlines as they unexpectedly fired Adrian Griffin from his head coaching duties. The rookie head coach, who guided them to the second-best record in the East this season with a 30-13 card, suddenly got sacked by the Bucks without any key signs of impending dismissal.
As it is, plenty of wild reactions were created within the basketball community, especially on the side of the Milwaukee fanbase. As such, Brooklyn Nets' coach Jacque Vaughn also shared his sentiments on Tuesday, airing an insightful perspective on the unforeseen booting made by the Bucks.
Value of continuity
As he was asked by reporters about Griffin's removal from his head coaching spot, Vaughn dropped key notions and the significance of “continuity” for every single team in the NBA.
Griffin was tapped by the Bucks last offseason to replace Mike Budenholzer, who was ousted as the team's HC after the ball club collapsed in a historic first-round upset in the 2023 Playoffs against the Miami Heat. Budenholzer was at the helm of Milwaukee's coaching for five seasons and was able to lead them to an NBA championship in 2020-21.
“You see the franchises in this league who have over and over been able to be great franchises, and a big part of that is continuity,” Vaughn said. “So whether that’s the Spurs, whether that’s the Heat, whether that’s been Utah, historically, there’s something to continuity. I don’t know what’s going on in someone else’s household. I always worry about my house and how tight and oriented it needs to be, so I’ll leave it at that. But there’s something to continuity in this league, and that’s why those three franchises have been pretty good for a long time.”
A case-to-case basis
As Vaughn spoke deeply about “continuity,” it truly holds important value for the team's direction and success. But in the end, a title-contending team like the Bucks, who adopted an “all or nothing” mindset this year with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, won't risk it by suddenly pulling the trigger if they do not have any critical and deep concerns to think of.
Though the Nets are struggling this season with a reeling 17-26 card, the franchise still seems locked and committed with Vaughn this year, as it was reported that there's “no indication” that he'll be placed in the hot seat.
