The Brooklyn Nets were apparently trying to brew a potential trade this 2023-24 starring Spencer Dinwiddie.

According to Ian Begley of SNY, both Brooklyn and the Atlanta Hawks have “touched base” earlier this season about a potential transaction that revolves around the veteran point guard.

“Also worth noting: Atlanta and Brooklyn touched base earlier in the season about a deal involving Spencer Dinwiddie. (Atlanta’s interest, presumably, is based on what they would look for if they moved Murray).”

Looking at Spencer's trade situation

Performance and contract-wise, Dinwiddie, 30, stands as one of the Nets’ considerable trade chips heading to the Feb. 8 trade deadline.

Spencer’s contract, a three-year deal worth $54 million, is about to reach the end after this season. While he stands extension-eligible, there has been no clear interest coming from the franchise that they'll re-sign him.

Dinwiddie's contract year coincides with the fact that he's underwhelming in his role as the Nets' starting point man in the wake of Ben Simmons’ untimely absence. For 38 games, he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.6 boards while shooting an uncharacteristic 39.1 percent from the field (31.9 percent from threes per 6.0 attempts).

Will the Nets’ trade framework for Dejounte Murray start with Dinwiddie?

Interestingly, this report by Begley suddenly entered upon the previous note that all have to “keep an eye” on Brooklyn in the ongoing Dejounte Murray sweepstakes. As the Hawks are visibly struggling amid his backcourt partnership with Trae Young, Murray got tagged as one of the most notable trade targets in the Association heading to the Feb. 8 trade deadline.

Should Brooklyn desire to acquire the service of Murray, they'll truly need to consider the inclusion of Dinwiddie in the potential package that they'll send to Atlanta. Depending on what the Hawks will further demand for their guard, the Nets are capable of providing them as they have a loaded draft chest and other salary-matching pieces like Royce O'Neale.

At a 16-24 record and now out of the current Play-In picture, the Nets truly need to make a move to save their season.
