Report: Mavericks Consulted Luka Doncic Before Kyrie Irving Trade
The Dallas Mavericks have traded for Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving in a blockbuster move that sends Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith to Brooklyn. The move has come as a surprise to many, especially those who are skeptical about a Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic pairing, but according to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks consulted Doncic before pulling the trigger.
This certainly makes sense, as the Mavericks would not want to upset their franchise star by dealing for a player against his wishes; however, it is interesting to see it already reported. The Mavericks are Luka Doncic's team, and adding a player like Kyrie Irving is a huge decision that must be approved by Doncic. From the looks of this report, Doncic was in favor of Dallas making the move, and now has a co-star in the backcourt.
Despite making the Western Conference Finals last season, the Dallas Mavericks have failed to put a championship roster around Luka Doncic. Even with their run last season, it was clear the team needed more firepower if they wanted to truly contend. Trading for Kyrie Irving is undoubtedly a risk, but the potential reward is very high. Should Doncic and Irving work well together, they have the potential to be one of the league's best offensive parings, and a matchup nightmare for anybody in the league.
