As the Brooklyn Nets are planning to retool themselves heading to this season's trade deadline, their most prominent trade chip in Spencer Dinwiddie, is reportedly drawing interest from a Western Conference team.

According to Matt Moore of Action Network, Dinwiddie is believed to be on the trade radar of the Los Angeles Lakers.

“The Lakers are known to have interest in Spencer Dinwiddie and is likely to generate a market before the deadline,” Moore highlighted.

Spencer's trade case for the Nets

Now stepping at a disappointing 17-25 mark after firing a strong season start, the Nets are now feeling the sense of urgency to keep themselves afloat in the Eastern Conference contest.

With the team struggling, that leaves Spencer as a player to watch who could be moved by the franchise before the trade deadline. The veteran guard is on an expiring deal, and Brooklyn is yet to flash a significant interest in inking him with a contract extension.

Besides the contract situation, the veteran guard's zigzagging play in 2023-24 is a key aspect of his trade case for the Nets. Apparently, he elevated his game in the team's three-game road trip by averaging 18.0 points, 6.0 assists, and over 58 percent shooting from the field.

Assessing the Lakers’ probable intent for Dinwiddie

Spencer was previously tagged around the team's rumored interest in Atlanta Hawks star Dejounte Murray. This new report seems to be intriguing, coming from his hometown team, the Lakers.

As the Lakers are massively gutted in their ball-handling units with Gabe Vincent out for an extended time, that makes their interest in Dinwiddie reasonable. Besides, his expiring $18.9M offers them huge cap flexibility heading to the offseason.

Los Angeles was also announced as a potential suitor for both Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O'Neale, two of the Nets' key players who could be moved before Feb. 8.

As such, Brooklyn can only consider pulling needed moves that will put them back on the competitive track as the three veterans offer valuable contributions for plenty of contending suitors.
