It was announced by Shams Charania of The Athletic that former Denver Nuggets center JaVale McGee has been waived by the Dallas Mavericks. McGee played 42 games for the Mavericks last season, and last spent time with the Nuggets in 2021, which was his second stint in Denver.

McGee has played parts of five seasons with the Nuggets, starting in the 2011-12 season when he came over from the Washington Wizards. A three-time NBA champion, McGee won two rings with the Golden State Warriors, and another with the Los Angeles Lakers.

An experienced veteran, McGee may get another opportunity with a contender after being let go by the Mavericks. While he isn't the player he once was, McGee has still shown some value in limited bench minutes as a lob threat and rim protector. While some veterans don't get another look after getting released, there's always value in having a multi-time champion around, especially for younger groups that are trying to break into that tier.

In his five seasons with the Nuggets, McGee appeared in 134 games, averaging 8.3 PPG and 4.7 RPG in 17.1 minutes per contest. A reliable bench big, McGee has also spent time as a starter in the NBA. In his 863 NBA games, McGee has started 343 of them. While no team would be looking for him to start games for them next season, he could be a solid depth veteran.
