Former Nuggets Coach Makes Controversial Nikola Jokic-Carmelo Anthony Claim
When the Denver Nuggets gave Anthony Randolph #15 after it previously belonged to Carmelo Anthony, many questioned the move despite Anthony's complicated tenure in Denver. Randolph was with the Nuggets for just two seasons, and did not play in the NBA again after the 2013-14 season.
When Nikola Jokic was drafted in 2014, he was also given #15, and has since made it iconic with two regular season MVP awards, five All-NBA selections, five All-Star selections, and most importantly a Finals MVP award. A lock to have his jersey in the rafters one day, Jokic's #15 will never be worn by another player in Denver again. While this much is undebatable, some still believe Carmelo Anthony should also have his #15 in the rafters, including former Nuggets coach George Karl.
Karl has received a lot of pushback on this take, but has defended his controversial opinion in several follow-up Tweets. Believing that Anthony should have his jersey retired along with Jokic, Karl has acknowledged the complicated nature of Anthony's time in Denver, but believes his #15 is worthy of being immortalized in Nuggets history.
As previously mentioned, this is a very controversial opinion, but one that Karl has stood firmly on for a while. The Hall-of-Fame coach spent time in Denver from 2004-2013, and has a strong connection to the organization still.
