Former Warriors GM Gets Honest About Not Drafting Nikola Jokic

Everyone, including Golden State Warriors, missed on Jokic in the draft

The NBA Draft can be tricky. While there are sometimes clear-cut superstars, it's not uncommon that the best player in a draft is someone nobody saw coming. In the case of Nikola Jokic, 40 draft picks were announced in 2014 before he finally fell to the Denver Nuggets at pick 41.

Already an all-time great, Jokic would undoubtedly go first overall in a re-draft, but nobody knew at the time that he would become who he is today. Speaking on the broadcast during the Denver Nuggets vs. New Orleans Pelicans game, former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers got honest about passing on Nikola Jokic in the draft.

"We didn't think of him, it was a total miss," Myers said when asked what the Warriors thought of Jokic in the draft. "... It wasn't like we studied him intensely. It's a heck of a pick that's all I can say."

On why everyone missed on Jokic, Myers said, "I think he wasn't - he hadn't become him yet. I think he - probably unfairly, people judged him on appearance. They just did. They didn't think he could do these things in the NBA. There was a time [the Nuggets] also had [Jusuf] Nurkic and Jokic. Remember that early? Everybody thought Nurkic was so much better than Jokic. I guess I feel a little bit better that it wasn't even a close call... I don't have a memory of debating Jokic in the draft, I wish I did."
