Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers Training in Denver Before NBA Season
The Philadelphia 76ers recently announced that their training camp will take place at Colorado State University, about one hour from where the Denver Nuggets play their home games. NBA teams typically host their training camps away from home, as it gives players an opportunity to bond with their teammates while getting ramped up for the new season.
For Philadelphia, this will also give their players an opportunity to play in the altitude before making their lone trip to Denver on January 27th. While the 76ers only have one regular season game in Denver, training in the altitude is a great way to increase conditioning level. Several NBA players have spoken about the advantage the Nuggets have with their level of conditioning, because not only are they better equipped to handle the altitude than their opponents are, but they are also better conditioned for away games as well.
Much has been made of the Joel Embiid vs. Nikola Jokic matchup over the last year, especially with Embiid having not played in Denver since 2019. While the two dominant bigs have had multiple battles since then, all of them have come in Philadelphia. For fans in Denver, it would be great if Embiid were healthy and available when the 76ers come to town in late January.
Maintaining championship aspirations, the 76ers may also recognize that a possible NBA Finals series could take place against the defending champion Denver Nuggets. While that is of course several months away from training camp, some extra work in the altitude prior to the season would not hurt.
