Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James entered Saturday night's game against the Denver Nuggets needing just nine points to reach 40,000 for his legendary NBA career. Reaching that in the second quarter of this game, James made history, becoming the first player in league history to reach the 40,000 points mark.

James is of course the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, so every point he scores is technically history, but this round number of 40,000 is certainly something to celebrate. Still looking like a superstar, James has shown no signs of slowing down. With the level he is still at, James will put this all-time scoring record far out of reach.

While there may be somebody down the line who comes along and challenges James' record, it seems very unlikely that anyone will be able to match his combination of consistency and longevity. These are the two biggest keys to setting records like this, as a player needs to not only be dominant, but also consistent and available. James has been all of these things throughout his NBA career, and it has led him to this incredible night, where he became the first player in NBA history to reach 40,000 career points.

A great ambassador for the game, James had moved basketball forward, and will continue to do so as long as he remains around the game.
