NBA Champions Reveal Why They Traded Important Player
Bones Hyland seemed like he would be the point guard of the future for the Denver Nuggets. He was a first-round pick who showed a ton of promise for the team and could potentially be the backup to replace Jamal Murray down the line, but he was unexpectedly traded to the Clippers last season.
When the trade happened, some thought it was because of attitude problems, some thought it was because Bones wasn't getting many minutes, but Nuggets GM Calvin Booth recently finally revealed why. In an interview with Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer, Calvin Booth broke his silence on the Bones Hyland trade.
“I knew you couldn’t have two guys that couldn’t guard, and we couldn’t have two guys that were young and kind of more ‘me guys," Booth said. "Mike makes $30 million. He’s one of the best shooters in the NBA. So, Bones, there’s no place for you.”
It's refreshing to hear that the Bones Hyland trade wasn't over attitude problems but was just over fit between him and Michael Porter Jr. To some degree, it makes sense from the standpoint of not wanting two weak links on defense. From another perspective, it still doesn't really make sense to give up on such a young player and not believe that the two couldn't find a way to grow defensively at young ages. However, the Denver Nuggets won the NBA Championship, so every decision they made was the right one.
