Nuggets Star Nominated For a Major Award
Jamal Murray had the greatest comeback story of the NBA season. Unfortunately, national media members didn't give it enough respect or time, because they spent more time talking about the Lakers or Celtics. Now, it looks like Murray may be getting his due.
The ESPYS have officially nominated Jamal Murray for Best Comeback Athlete of the Year. Murray missed all of the 2021-22 NBA season with a torn ACL in his knee, didn't play for 18 months straight, and then looked like a legitimate All-Star during the NBA playoffs. The following people are his competitors for the award: Jon Jones, Alyssa Thomas, and Justin Verlander.
The jump that Murray had from regular season to playoffs was truly fantastic. In the regular season he averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 6.2 assists, on 45/40/83 shooting. Once the playoffs began, he averaged 26.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists on 47/40/93 shooting. In every single category possible, Jamal Murray raised his ceiling. It was best on display in the series against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he averaged 32.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.8 steals on 53/40/95 shooting - he put up Steph Curry numbers.
It's hard to tell whether Jamal Murray wins the ESPY award for Best Comeback Athlete, but he easily has the best comeback story in the NBA and that should mean something.
