Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. recently suffered a minor ankle injury, and is expected to miss Denver’s preseason opener vs. the Phoenix Suns. Head coach Michael Malone has made it clear that Denver is going to be cautious with Porter, even despite this not being a serious injury.

With starters often resting one or two preseason games anyways, this is a chance for Denver to get one of their highest paid players some additional rest after a short offseason. Having won the title, Denver has to be even more cautious with their players since they did not have as long of an offseason as other teams.

The good news is that Porter seems to be progressing in the right direction, with Malone telling reporters on Sunday that the swelling in his ankle had gone down. While it doesn’t seem likely that the sharpshooting forward will be available for the preseason opener, he should not be too far from a return to the court.

The Nuggets will face the Suns at 7:00 PM PST on Tuesday in a matchup that should still feature plenty of star power. This is a rematch of last postseason’s Western Conference Semi-Finals, and while the preseason is of course not an official rematch, it will still be fun to see these two talented teams face off again after a long summer.
