Patrick Beverley Takes Shot at Denver Nuggets Star
The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night, and while much of the focus was on Joel Embiid vs. Nikola Jokic, there was a guard battle that perhaps flew under the radar.
Nuggets star Jamal Murray scored just 17 points in this game, and none of them came when guarded by Patrick Beverley. Per the NBA's matchup data, Beverley defended Murray on 18 possessions, holding him to 0 points and 2 turnovers on those possessions.
When asked about the key to shutting Murray down, Beverley said, "No key. I’ve been locking his ass up for years."
Taking this shot at Murray, Beverley said he has been locking up the Nuggets star for years. Spending a lot of his career in the Western Conference, Beverley has seen Murray a lot, both in the regular season and postseason. As Beverley tells it, that's been a matchup he has won for years.
The NBA has been tracking individual matchup data since the 2018-19 season, and per their numbers, Beverley has held Murray to 44.4% from the field in their individual matchups since then. While that's not awful efficiency, it is just below Murray's career average from the field.
Never afraid to take shots at his opponents, Beverley made it known that he believes he has been locking Murray up for years, including in this game.
