Indiana Mad Ants head coach Tom Hankins wins December 2023 G League coach of the month

The Mad Ants are off to the best start in G League history

Indiana Mad Ants head coach Tom Hankins has been named the NBA G League Coach of the Month for the month of December.

The G League announced the honor on Wednesday. Hankins, who has been the head coach of the G League club since early 2021, had not won the award before. He guided the Mad Ants to a 13-1 record in December.

During the month, Indiana clinched a berth in the Showcase Cup playoffs, and they reached the title game before falling to Westchester. They were the top overall seed in the event.

After the Showcase Cup ended and the G League regular season began, Hankins' group went 3-0 to close out December. After winning again on Thursday night, the Mad Ants are 4-1 in the 2023-24 campaign.

"Tom [Hankins] is helping me be a great point guard," Pacers two-way contract guard Isaiah Wong said of his head coach earlier this season.

Indiana went on a 14-game winning streak earlier this season, and their 18-2 record after 20 games is the best in G League history. They have been excellent to start this season dating back to their opening night victory.

The Mad Ants, who played in Fort Wayne prior to the ongoing campaign, reached the G League playoffs for the first time since 2018 last season. They have been growing during Hankins tenure, and this is his best team yet. He is the second Mad Ants head coach to win G League Coach of the Month, joining Steve Gansey from November 2016.

Indiana next plays on January 10 when they host the Cleveland Charge.
