Source: Jarace Walker and Obi Toppin changing jersey numbers for Indiana Pacers
Jarace Walker and Obi Toppin are changing jersey numbers for the Indiana Pacers, a league source confirmed to AllPacers earlier today. The Pacers officially announced the switch roughly 20 minutes later.
Walker was originally number 1 for the Pacers, and he has worn that number throughout Summer League play thus far. He chose it after the NBA Draft as it had been unworn by a Pacer since 2020-21.
"It just kind of stood out to me that night. No meaning to it," Walker said of picking 1 earlier this month. He wore 25 in college, but that number is currently taken by Jalen Smith.
Walker will now wear number 5, and he can be seen in his new threads in the NBA rookie photo shoot that took place this week in Las Vegas. It is not currently known if he will switch uniform numbers during Summer League action. The last player to be number 5 for Indiana was Edmond Sumner in 2021.
With Walker moving numbers, the newly-acquired Toppin can take 1. When Walker was drafted, Toppin was not on the Pacers roster so 1 was available.
Toppin wore 1 in his three seasons with the New York Knicks prior to being traded to Indiana. He was listed on the Pacers website as having jersey number 4 prior to the swap.
The number 1 jersey was last rocked by T.J. Warren with the blue and gold. Walker and the Summer League Pacers will next play on Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks.
