Sources: Indiana Pacers agree to trade with San Antonio Spurs, will acquire Doug McDermott
The Indiana Pacers will be acquiring forward Doug McDermott from the San Antonio Spurs in a trade, a league source told AllPacers today.
In exchange, the Pacers will send the Spurs Marcus Morris, who they acquired in an earlier trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, and the LA Clippers' 2029 second-round draft pick. They also grabbed that draft pick from the Sixers earlier in the day.
McDermott, 32, played for the Pacers from 2018-2021. He is currently averaging 6.0 points per game for San Antonio while shooting 43.9% from deep. His outside shooting is still a weapon as he gets older.
His prior experience with Indiana will be valuable in this trade — he has played with Pacers guard T.J. McConnell and center Myles Turner before. He also spent half a season playing for now-Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle in Dallas seven years ago.
With the blue and gold, McDermott averaged 10.3 points per game across three seasons. He may be needed for the team as a reserve wing this season. His contract, which is for $13.75 million this season, expires on July 1.
"He's just an elite shooter and scorer, something that we obviously needed once Buddy [Hield] was gone. Obviously great locker room guy. Moves the ball. If he's open, it's cash," McConnell said of McDermott. "He's going to be good for our group."
McConnell believes McDermott will be a seamless fit with the blue and gold. His salary and Morris' match, so there are no other players in the deal. It will become a three-team swap with the 76ers, so cash considerations will be involved.
The Pacers have an open roster spot after the move.
