Jose Alvarado Inks 4-Year Deal With Pelicans

The former undrafted rookie guard from Georgia Tech will be with the Pelicans for the foreseeable future.

Jose Alvardo signed a four-year, $6.5 million contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans. According to Shams Charania, the Pelicans’ fan-favorite guard receives a guaranteed $3.4 million over the next two years, including $1.5 million on top of the $800K he earned this season.

Alvarado, 23, signed a two-way deal with New Orleans after going unselected in last year’s draft following four collegiate seasons at Georgia Tech. This season, he has played a key role in the team’s backcourt, averaging 6.2 points, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals in 15.3 minutes per contest entering Sunday. He has also shot 43.5% from the floor and 31.6% behind the arc.

The Pelicans currently have a full 15-man roster. Tyrone Wallace is on a 10-day contract that will expire this week. Should the teams decide against re-signing Wallace, Alvarado will be an official roster addition and eligible for postseason play. The Pelicans are currently in 9th place in the Western Conference with a .5-game lead on the Lakers and a 1.5 game lead on the Spurs.

Jose Alvarado

Lately, Alvarado has been pivotal in a few games, including a career-high 23 points Saturday against the Spurs. Jose averages approximately 24 minutes per game in the last ten contests, so Coach Willie Green is comfortable playing Alvarado big-time minutes off the bench. Not only have the fans embraced him, but teammates and NBA peers alike have as well.

Raptors guard Fred VanVleet commented on Twitter how it was well deserved for Jose to get his contract. Teammate Brandon Ingram joked after the game, “he can start putting his card away” now that Jose has signed his new agreement. Hard work does pay off, as Alvarado is living proof of that, and now fans get to watch him work hard for the next few years in New Orleans.
