Pelicans' Zion Williamson Suffers Setback During Injury Rehab
New Orleans, La- New Orleans Pelicans All-Star Zion Williamson suffered a setback in rehabbing his right hamstring the team announced on Sunday. Team basketball operations chief David Griffin expects the timetable for a return to be "multiple weeks past All-star break". Williamson previously missed the last 20 games since injuring his hamstring on January 2.
Williamson, who was voted as an All-Star starter this season, played in 29 games and is averaging 26 points on 60% shooting. New Orleans is 6-14 since Williamson injured his hamstring, including a ten-game losing streak. The Pelicans currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference standings at 29-28 entering Sunday.
Griffin said Williamson was ramping up his work on the floor in preparation for a return and had been cleared for 3-on-3 work before aggravating the injury. New Orleans decided to remain relatively quiet during the trade deadline. They made one deal in trading guard Devonte' Graham to the San Antonio Spurs for Josh Richardson.
Williamson missed all of last season with a foot injury and parts of his first two seasons with various ailments. He has played in just 114 games over his first three-plus seasons in the league. The 'Big 3' of Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and CJ McCollum have played in just 10 games this season.
