Willie Green Received A Contract Extension From New Orleans Pelicans Last Season, Per Report
New Orleans Pelicans Coach Willie Green is here for the foreseeable future. According to The Athletic's Sam Amick, Green "has multiple years remaining on a (contract) extension that had not been previously reported." Green took the New Orleans job back in the 2021-2022 season.
Over his first three years, Green has increased his team's win total from 36 wins his first season, 42 victories last season, and now 49 wins this year. The Pelicans have made the playoffs once and have a chance to do so again with a win in the NBA Play-in Tournament.
Green previously worked as an assistant coach for Steve Kerr's staff with the Golden State Warriors, where he was a part of two NBA championships, 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
Details of the extension have yet to be made public, but Green has helped the Pelicans to its second-best win total in franchise history (49) and the most road wins in its history (28). Green has had success in New Orleans despite the inability of his star player, Zion Williamson, to remain healthy.
Williamson missed the entire 2021-2022 season dealing with a foot injury and only played 29 games last year. This season, Zion played in a career-high 70 games for the 49-win Pelicans. New Orleans has a chance to secure a playoff berth with a win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in the Play-In Tournament.
