James Borrego Returns To New Orleans
ESPN NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that James Borrego, a former assistant coach for New Orleans, will return to the Pelicans as an associate head coach.
On May 10, 2018, the Charlotte Hornets hired Borrego as their head coach following three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant. However, on April 22, 2022, Borrego was terminated from the position. Before becoming the first Latino head coach in the NBA's history, he won two NBA championships as an assistant coach with San Antonio in 2005 and 2007.
During his tenure as head coach for Orlando (interim) and Charlotte, Borrego's record was 148-183 in 331 games. His Hornets teams did not make the playoffs in the four seasons that he led them. Wojnarowski also posted that Borrego had offers from other teams before accepting New Orleans' job offer. He coached Wille Green as a player for the New Orleans Hornets (2010-11) and again with the Orlando Magic (2015).
Jarron Collins will remain in New Orleans following the Detroit Pistons' signing of former Pelicans head coach Monty Williams to a six-year, $78 million contract.
The franchise has not revealed the financial details of James Borrego's contract with New Orleans.
