NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Pelicans report that rookie center Liam Robbins has a stress reaction his right fibula.  No return date has been set yet for his return. Robbins was seen at training camp in a boot.

A stress reaction is a bone injury that starts with bruising and swelling. A stress fracture is a more serious injury that occurs when the bone becomes weak enough to break.

Stress Reaction vs. Stress Fracture

A stress reaction can progress to a stress fracture if the activity persists. Symptoms of a stress reaction include:

  • Bruising and swelling in the bone
  • Pain during loading
  • Pain at rest or with low load tasks like walking or at night
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Structural fatigue

Some common causes of stress fractures include:

  • Practicing or training too often without resting enough
  • An abrupt change in physical activity

New Orleans signed Robbins to a free-agent contract on Sept. 29. He went undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft after playing with Drake, Minnesota, and his final two seasons with Vanderbilt. Robbins made 129 game appearances with 83 starts, averaging 10.63 points, 5.53 rebounds, .81 assists, and 2.37 blocks.
