PREVIEW
The Detroit Pistons (3-12) begin their six-game Western Conference road trip against the Los Angeles Clippers (8-7) on Thursday night. Both teams are coming off losses with the Pistons falling to the Raptors on Monday and the Clippers falling to the Mavericks in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday.
Surprisingly, this game will feature two teams with some of the lowest offensive efficiency ratings in the league. The Piston's are not surprising, given that they rank bottom-five in the league in both two-point and three-point shooting percentage. But the Clippers? Pistons West? Yes, this team has taken a step-back offensively, going from one of the most prolific scoring teams just a few years back to the bottom of the league. For both teams, we can say injuries and new roles are to blame. The young Pistons are still figuring out to play with each other. Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren provide a dynamic to the team that they did not have last year. Bojan Bogdanovic has also shared some ball handling duties, which has impacted players like Saddiq Bey, who moved to the bench in the last game. The Clippers are no different. We know about Kawhi's injuries, but creating a rotation with the amount of talent on the team has been difficult. When a player steps up such as Terrance Mann, another player goes to the bench and does not play like Robert Covington. The lack of stability in both teams is noteworthy. Luckily for the Clippers, they are still 8-7.
For the Pistons, it is going to be interesting to see how the team responds with Isaiah Stewart out of the lineup. Whatever opinion you may have of Stewart, he was quite important for the Pistons. His three-point shot was coming around and he is an anchor of the Pistons defense and rebounding attack. Surely, we are now going to see players like Jalen Duren and Marvin Bagley III play an extended role. Duren, specifically, has a chance to shine and perhaps audition for the starting center position during this trip.
