Raptors Finalize Trade Deadline Moves as Deadline Passes
The Toronto Raptors are done.
The organization wrapped up Thursday’s trade deadline with a pair of moves, adding Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji while dealing away Dennis Schröder, Thad Young, Otto Porter Jr., Kira Lewis Jr., and a late 2024 first-round pick in two deals with the Utah Jazz and Brooklyn Nets, the team announced.
Bruce Brown Jr., Gary Trent Jr., and Chris Boucher will all remain with the organization despite trade rumors surrounding the trio for weeks. Brown, in particular, had been the center of trade talks, but Toronto decided to keep the 27-year-old who has a team option worth $23 million this summer.
Toronto opted to prioritize flexibility, by moving Schröder to the Nets in a deal that freed up $13 million in salary cap space for the offseason. The organization acquired Spencer Dinwiddie in return but elected to waive the 30-year-old before he arrived in Toronto to save $1.5 million in a bonus he was set to receive this season.
Now the Raptors will head into the offseason with Olynyk, Trent, and Jordan Nwora all entering unrestricted free agency. Olynyk is widely expected to re-sign with the organization, but Trent’s free agency decision will be worth keeping an eye on as he’s regressed since picking up his player option this past summer.
Looking ahead, Toronto still has Indiana’s first-round pick along with an early second-round pick from the Detroit Pistons. There’s a chance the Raptors keep their own first-round pick if it lands in the top six, giving Toronto as many as three picks in this year’s draft.
