NBA Insider Shares Latest News Involving Raptors' OG Anunoby
OG Anunoby buzz keeps on circulating with a month and a half to go before the Feb. 8 trade deadline.
The New York Knicks have now been mentioned as a team interested in acquiring the Toronto Raptors forward, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. New York had brief conversations last season about a deal for Anunoby involving RJ Barrett, but it appears nothing was close, Scotto said.
“NBA executives exploring the trade market for wings believe Toronto will do whatever it takes to keep Anunoby in free agency this summer,” Scotto wrote.
Anunoby essentially cannot be signed to an extension during this season as his max extension offer is less than what he can expect to make in free agency. Multiple teams are expected to have cap space this summer and it could take Toronto upward of $40 million per season to retain Anunoby in free agency.
It's worth noting that the Knicks are currently suing the Raptors for allegedly stealing proprietary information from New York when former Knicks staffer Ike Azotam was recruited to Toronto this past season. The Raptors have denied the allegations.
One player who could pique Toronto’s interest is Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley who is in the final year of his contract with New York. He’ll be a restricted free agent in the summer as contract negotiations with the Knicks have not progressed toward a deal, Scotto wrote. It is possible New York looks to trade the 24-year-old sixth man ahead of the trade deadline this year.
