Raptors Share Update on Kelly Olynyk & Ochai Agbaji's Status
Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji have cleared their physicals but will not play Friday night for the Toronto Raptors.
The two newest members of the organization will be held out for the first game of Toronto’s back-to-back following their trade from the Utah Jazz, the team announced.
Both players are expected to suit up Saturday night when Toronto takes on the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Moving forward, Olynyk and Agbaji give Toronto two new rotation players to replace Dennis Schröder and Thad Young who departed in a cost-saving move with the Brooklyn Nets.
Olynyk will slide into Young's role as a floor-spacing backup center behind Jakob Poeltl. His presence should give Toronto a different look to throw at opposing teams thanks to Olynyk's 42.9% three-point shooting this season.
Agbaji should eventually see rotation minutes as well as a backup guard off the bench for Toronto. He'll bring some much-needed defensive intensity to Toronto's second unit as someone who can play alongside Bruce Brown, Gradey Dick, and Olynyk moving forward.
The big question for Toronto will be how the organization plans to fill its backup point guard minutes without Schröder around. Expect Scottie Barnes' role to expand as the team's primary facilitator whenever Immanuel Quickley is off the court, Raptors coach Darko Rajaković said. Brown will see a bump in playing time too as one of the few guards Toronto still has on the roster.
For Houston, Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams, and Tari Eason have all been ruled out.
