Raptors Fall to Magic Despite Career-High From Scottie Barnes

In this story:
The Toronto Raptors fall to the Orlando Magic 114-121 in what was a physical matchup from the opening tip. Scottie Barnes delivers a dominant performance, dropping a career-high 41 points, to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
While the offense started to find its groove in the second half, the Raptors continued to go to the well with Barnes. His usage highlights my biggest takeaways from this Raptors loss.
Scottie Barnes’ Career-High Still Not Enough

When the offense lacked substance and flow, the Raptors continued to look to Scottie Barnes to assert himself and get to his spots. He was backing down defenders, making the most of his mid-range shots, and following up his misses at the rim. He led all players at the half with 23 points, which translated to a dominant all-around performance to close the game.
It's a shame that his 41 points didn't translate to a win. While Immanuel Quickley had a solid outting and Jakob Poeltl notched his first double-fouble of the season, they were lacking the steady play of RJ Barrett. He struggled to find his shot and continued to turn the ball over at costly times.
Regardless of the outcome, Barnes notches his first 40-point game, which felt long-overdue at this point.
Fouls Pile Up Leading to Loss

In a strange first half where the Raptors shot 42% from the field off of 52 attempts, still put them down nine points, after two. Orlando shot 18 less attempts from the field, but that was a direct result of the 19 personal fouls committed by the Raptors. The Magic went an efficient 20-24 from the line. Whether you agree with the refs calls or not, the Magic went right back to playing a physical brand of basketball that found them success in their matchup earlier this week.
Orlando only shot five more free throws in the second half. It was their uncharacteristic three-point shooting that the Raptors didn’t have an answer for. The Magic shot 18-34 from beyond the arc, which was a season best for this squad. The three-point attempts were neck and neck over the course of the two games played between these teams, until Orlando found a second gear to close out the game.
Signs Of Life From Jakob Poeltl

Finally, some semblance of the Jakob Poeltl we’ve seen before. He didn’t start the game well by any means, racking up two quick fouls in almost two minutes of action. It seemed as if we were in-store for another quiet outing from Poeltl, especially after the quick fouls picked up by Collin Murray-Boyles. This led to early minutes again for Trayce Jackson-Davis, as this script felt all too familiar.
Coach Darko elected to sub Poeltl back in the later frames of the first quarter, even though he had two fouls. This is where he began to find his rhythm, making his way into the paint and crashing the boards. He finished with 12 points off 50 per cent shooting, with 11 rebounds while logging a +8 when on the floor. Still, not enough to get the Raptors over the hump.
The Raptors now head on the road to begin their Western road swing, starting with the LA Lakers on Sunday.
