HOUSTON — Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun is doing everything he can to help his home country, Turkey.

Sengun posted on social media Saturday evening, announcing the start of his fundraiser, Alperen Sengun's Support for Earthquake Relief In Turkey.

The fundraiser will benefit Ahbap, a Turkish organization working in earthquake-torn areas. Sengun said he is auctioning off game-worn signed jerseys to raise money.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated his home country of Turkey, which occurred early Monday morning across southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria.

Sengun has been in touch with his family and friends since the disaster. He said the earthquake did not affect his loved ones but described the tragedy as "indescribable pain."

According to the Washington Post, the death toll has crossed 24,000 and is expected to double.

“My prayers, my heart is with our citizens who were affected by the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş," Sengun wrote on his social media feed. "R.I.P. to those who lost their lives, I wish a speedy recovery to the injured."

Sengun began his pro career as a teenager in Turkey, where he was named MVP in 2021.

The Rockets acquired Sengun's rights from the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2021 NBA Draft. And he has since established himself as a foundational piece for Houston's rebuild.

Following the news of the earthquake, Sengun said it was tough to focus during the Rockets' 140-120 loss to the Sacramento Kings Monday night. He recorded 15 points (4-10 FG, 6-6 FT) and seven rebounds in the loss. But the seven turnovers he committed indicated his mind was not on the game.

"I talked with my Turkish friends, and we're going to talk about starting a fundraiser," Sengun said. "I know I have a job over here. I came here, and I did my job."
