Houston Rockets' Amen Thompson Proves Starting Potential?
When Fred VanVleet signed a three-year, $128 million contract to be a vital part of the emerging Houston Rockets, he was immediately expected to be the secondary offensive weapon behind Jalen Green. With a contract like that, it was a given that he would be a starter.
The All-Star point guard built an impressive resumé in Toronto, and he has looked all the part during each preseason game with the Rockets.
He arrived expected to provide scoring, playmaking and leadership. His defensive concerns are valid, as playing both sides of the ball has always been his weakness.
But the Rockets drafted Amen Thompson, an oversized guard with insane playmaking and defensive potential.
Unfortunately, he was not a sure thing and was drafted only on his potential. During the Rockets' five-game preseason outing, Thompson has emerged as an elite two-way prospect, showcasing better defense than VanVleet and more athleticism than anyone on the Rockets, including Green.
His three-point shot, deemed shaky at best, is still on the verge of developing. But Thompson appears to be willing to shoot with each open opportunity.
Both Thompson and VanVleet had moved the ball well during the preseason. But Thompson's passing ability and court vision could give him the upper hand as Houston's best playmaker by the end of this season.
A backcourt of two freak athletes in Green and Thompson would immediately propel Houston to exciting heights not seen in years.
The backcourt pairing of Green and Thompson could create one of the league's most exciting backcourt. But fans will have to wait at least a year before enjoying the pairing bloom together in the starting unit.
As for this season, Thompson will have to spend his rookie year learning behind the veteran services of VanVleet, which could become more beneficial for the 20-year-old guard.
