Following Buyout From Rockets, What's Next For John Wall?
HOUSTON — John Wall's future in the NBA appears bleak. He is a free agent following a second buyout from the Houston Rockets.
According to NBC Sports Chicago, The Chicago Bulls had been in contact with the former NBA All-Star. But the Bulls, who currently have a void at point guard, signed Patrick Beverley Monday evening. Chicago's decision to sign Beverley could be an indication Wall's career is nearing an end.
The Rockets acquired Wall in a three-team trade that sent Eric Gordon to the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 9. And shortly after their reunion, the Rockets wasted no time putting a plan in place to waive Wall.
When Wall joined the Clippers in June, his acquisition was supposed to push Los Angeles over the hump. But eight months later, the Clippers departed from his services and signed Russell Westbrook nearly two weeks later.
He averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists during his short stint with the Clippers. But Wall's lack of durability has hampered his chances at a second NBA career beyond his All-Star years.
Rest and several nagging injuries limited Wall to 34 games in Los Angeles. But he missed the majority of his time due to an abdominal injury.
Wall's time with the Clippers was a failure. But perhaps his final season in Houston could lead to one last NBA job.
In 2021, Wall appeared in 40 games and averaged 20.6 points, 6.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds for the 17-55 Rockets. Wall proved he still had something left in the tank during his lone season playing for the Rockets after a two-year hiatus.
Wall's next stop will need the perfect blend of health and opportunity to find a second life in the NBA. But no situation has been right for Wall since his jettison from the Washington Wizards in December 2020.
