Rockets' Cam Whitmore Donates Check, Host Basketball Clinic At YMCA
HOUSTON — Houston Rockets' Cam Whitmore partnered with Wilson Sporting Goods to present the Harriet & Joe Foster Family YMCA with a donation check and to conduct a basketball clinic for its members. The event was held Tuesday afternoon at Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA.
Wilson Sporting Goods announced a campaign with Whitmore and fellow rookies Jett Howard of the Orlando Magic and Jalen Wilson of the Brooklyn Nets. The objective was to help enable access to play at a YMCA in their respective team’s market.
"Confidence and work ethic," Whitmore said when asked about the lessons he wants to teach the kids. "It's what got me here. Without that, you cannot be that person. Just keep working. Keep the main goal the main goal and take out all of the distractions."
Players increased Wilson’s donation with their play at the 2023 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Whitmore, who was named MVP of NBA Summer League, doubled Wilson’s donation amount through his performance.
Whitmore averaged 19.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and a stellar 2.5 steals in the Summer League. He led the Rockets to the Summer League Finals, where they fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers on July 17.
The rookie prospect from Villanova was a projected top-10 pick entering the 2023 NBA Draft but fell to the Rockets at pick No. 20.
Wilson's Summer League program is part of a multi-year national partnership with YMCA of the USA. Over the past three years, $1,500,000 in funding has been provided to enable equity and access to sports for underserved youth.
