Houston Rockets Focusing on Lessons Amid Three-Game Losing Streak
HOUSTON — A winless start to the 2023-24 season wasn't ideal for the Houston Rockets. But three games in, they are 0-3. The Rockets have taken tough losses over the previous two games, but each defeat has led to an early season lesson on handling adversity.
"Regardless of wins and losses, there are always lessons to take from each one," coach Ime Udoka said. "Wins do sometimes mask things. But there are a lot of things we could be doing better."
The Rockets had a chance to open their seven-game homestand with a win over the Golden State Warriors. But Stephen Curry's 14-point explosion in the final quarter led to a 106-95 defeat.
But when reflecting on the team's three-game losing streak, Udoka emphasized how the loss against the San Antonio Spurs has provided the most significant lessons.
Inefficient play during the fourth quarter and overtime periods led to Houston's 126-122 loss inside the Frost Bank Center. The Rockets held a 98-93 lead with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. But following a dunk made by Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs outscored Houston 33-24 during the final 11 minutes.
After the heartbreaking defeat, Udoka noted that their effort and physicality improved during Sunday's loss to the Warriors, which indicated the team's ongoing growth.
"I am not satisfied with the results, but I am satisfied with the improvements I have seen," Udoka said. "Other than letting go of the rope in Orlando, it has been a matter of finishing and learning from mistakes. We are seeing growth. We are seeing progress. As a group, we are getting better."
The Rockets will try to end their three-game losing streak against the 1-2 Charlotte Hornets Wednesday night, inside the Toyota Center. In preparation, Udoka said the team began Tuesday's practice by watching game film of "all of the things" they have done well during their losing streak.
