Dillon Brooks Headlines Rockets' Free Agency Wish List
HOUSTON — Dillon Brooks will be a free agent following a disappointing end to his career with the Memphis Grizzlies. The Athletic reported in April that the Grizzlies do not plan to re-sign Brooks following an embarrassing postseason outing against the Los Angeles Lakers, where Memphis fell in six games.
The Houston Rockets are interested in adding veterans to their young corps as they enter phase II of their rebuilding project. They will enter free agency with close to $60 million in cap space. And according to Yahoo Sports, Brooks is one of several players the Rockets will target as a free agent in July.
Even though Brooks' tenure in Memphis ended poorly, he has established himself as one of the best defensive wings in the league. His signing would help enhance the Rockets' appalling defense — which has finished near the bottom of the league for three consecutive seasons.
Brooks is coming off a season where he averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 73 games. But against the Lakers, he scored an average of 10.3 points on .312/.238/.714 shooting splits.
Brooks was a second-round pick (No. 45 overall) by the Rockets during the 2017 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Grizzlies immediately following the selection.
Other free agents Houston could target are Milwaukee Bucks big man Brook Lopez and Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet — should James Harden pass on signing with the Rockets.
