NBA 2K Reveals Rockets' Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore's Ratings

Houston Rockets rookies Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore react to their NBA 2K24 ratings.
In this story:

As the annual NBA 2K video game emerges its launch date on Sept. 8, the gaming franchise has gradually been releasing the player ratings.

The highest mark a player can achieve is a 99 overall rating. Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic has the highest rating among active players with a 98.

Houston Rockets rookies Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore were given their NBA 2K24 ratings on Sunday.

Thompson thought he should be a 77, but received a 76. Whitmore thought he should be a 75, but received a 74.

They both responded with a simple "I'll take it."

Nevertheless, like most sports video games, NBA 2K ratings fluctuate throughout the season based on the player's performance. There have been years that a player's rating has gone up/down 10 notches.

The rookie duo both believe their ratings will be much higher by the end of the season.

"I'll get it to a 78 or 80," Whitmore said.

"Hopefully 85-plus," Thompson said.

NBA 2K created a concept of badges for players a number of years ago that are essentially natural boosts that everyone receives.

Whitmore is expecting to receive the "Giant Slayer" badge. This gives the player a better chance of dunking or finishing over someone tall in the paint. Whitmore is also hoping for "shooting and playmaking badges" as well.

Like the player's overall rating, NBA 2K also gives up to a 99 for all categories of basketball (three-point shooting, dunking, perimeter defense, etc,).

Whitmore believes he'll have a 90-plus dunk rating and wants his dunks to be animated like two current All-Stars.

"I would want a LeBron (James) or Zach LaVine type of dunk package," Whitmore said. "I try to model my dunks after them."

Thompson, who is known for his playmaking and athleticism, prefers that 2K emphasizes a dribbling package, so he "can get to the rim whenever (he) wants."
