Rockets To Face Spurs, Victor Wembanyama Twice In Preseason
HOUSTON — The San Antonio Spurs released their home schedule for the 2023 preseason, and there will be a preview of the renewed rivalry against the Houston Rockets.
The Spurs announced Monday afternoon that their three-game home schedule features a pair of preseason games against the Rockets on Oct. 16 and Oct. 18 inside the AT&T Center.
The two-game preseason battle in San Antonio will mark the Rockets' first contest against No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama. As a member of Metropolitans 92, Wembanyama averaged 21.6 points on 47.0 percent shooting from the field, 10.4 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.
Wembanyama was the most sought-after prospect entering the 2023 NBA Draft since LeBron James 20 years ago.
The Rockets had a 14 percent chance to land the No. 1 pick for the rights to draft the French phenom. But after falling to the No. 4 pick for the first time in franchise history, Houston drafted Amen Thompson from Overtime Elite.
Thompson led the City Reapers to the OTE championship after averaging 16.4 points and 5.9 assists during the 2022-23 season.
"I'm just excited to play with the Rockets — my new team," Thompson said. "San Antonio, we've gotta get through them."
The Rockets have not released their full preseason schedule. But three of their games have been released by their opponents. In addition to the Spurs, the Rockets will also face the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 12 in Birmingham, AL.
