Rockets To Sign Nate Hinton, Matthew Mayer To Training Camp Roster
HOUSTON — The Houston Rockets have spent the past 24 hours shaping their training camp roster ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Starting with the acquisitions of Jeenathan Williams and Jermaine Samuels Tuesday night, the Rockets added five new players to their training camp roster. Wednesday morning, as first reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets also added Nate Hinton, Matthew Mayer and Joshua Obiesie.
Hinton and Mayer will be joining the Rockets after a successful stint with the organization during the 2023 Summer League tournament in Las Vegas, where the Rockets advanced to the championship game in July.
After Amen Thompson exited Las Vegas with a Grade 2 ankle injury, Hinton kept the Rockets' guard play afloat. He started all five games in Thompson's absence and averaged 11.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in 26.0 minutes per game.
Hinton's best performance came during the Rockets' 115-101 victory against the Utah Jazz on July 16. He finished with a game-high 27 points, five rebounds and three assists. The former University of Houston prospect spent last season playing for the Cleveland Charge. He averaged 12.0 points and 6.3 rebounds across 27 games.
Mayer went undrafted during the 2023 NBA Draft after a successful season at Illinois. He averaged 19.8 points and 11.5 rebounds off the bench. For the Fighting Illini last season, Mayer averaged 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.2 blocks.
Obiesie will sign a standard NBA contract despite his pending absence from training camp. He spent last season with the Fraport Skyliners of Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga and averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 24.1 minutes per game.
Obiesie competed in the 2019 Nike Hoops Summit and was with Sacramento for the 2021 California Classic Summer League.
