Kevin Porter Jr. Absent from Houston Rockets: Felony Assault 'Allegations Horrible’
HOUSTON — General manager Rafael Stone said Monday morning that Kevin Porter Jr. is not with the Houston Rockets a day before training camp.
Porter was arrested on felony assault charges following an incident with girlfriend Kysre Gondrezick on Sept. 11 in New York. He was released the next day on $75,000 bail. Porter is scheduled to be back in New York on Oct. 16.
Prosecutors revealed in their allegations that Porter left Gondrezick with a fractured neck vertebra and a cut above her right eye. Stone described the allegations against Porter as “very troubling."
"The allegations are deeply troubling," Stone said. "I informed him he could not be a part of the Houston Rockets. He has not been with the team and will not be here at media day."
According to The Athletic, the Rockets have contacted multiple teams to get a deal done for Porter. They added that the Rockets are willing to add draft compensation as an incentive for Porter.
The 22-year-old guard is entering the first of a four-year $82.5 million contract extension for the 2023-24 campaign. He is slated to make $15.9 million for the upcoming season. The remainder of his contract is non-guaranteed.
Porter has appeared in 146 games with the Rockets since 2021. He has averaged 17.2 points on 42.8 percent shooting from the field, 36.1 percent shooting from behind the arc, 6.0 assists and 1.2 steals.
"The allegations here are horrific, no question about it," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. "I don’t know anything more about the actual facts, other than reading those allegations. We’re not in season. We have a bit of time to decide whether it would be appropriate for him to go to training camp or not."
